Access Courses

For many people, particularly mature students aged 19+, returning to education can seem like a daunting experience, and studying at a higher level can sometimes be a huge step to take. Moreover, they may not have A Levels (or equivalent qualifications), but they do have the motivation and the enthusiasm to go to university, and do well there, even though it may be years since they last did any studying at all.

For these people, Access to Higher Education Diploma courses, run by Sunderland College, provide the academic skills and the study skills needed to go on to university. For those aged 19+, they are a real alternative to studying for A Levels themselves. They provide an excellent way to gain a qualification, improve job prospects and prepare for higher education.

For those aiming towards particular university courses in specific career areas, Sunderland College offers specialist Access to Higher Education Diploma courses, including:

  • Access to Art and Design
  • Access to Nursing, Care and Health
  • Access to Teaching
  • Access to Computing

In addition, Sunderland College offers the General Access Course, which enables students to go on to other degree courses, including Business, Criminology, English, Law and Psychology, to name just a few.

Courses can be studied full-time or part-time, to fit studying around work patterns or family needs.

Most courses begin in September, but a fast track General Access to Higher Education Diploma course may be available in January.

Grants (subject to conditions) may be available. Help with childcare and support with applying to university is also offered.
