Help with Telephone Applications
For some jobs you might be asked to ring and ask for an application form. It's unlikely that you'll be speaking to the person who'll be interviewing so don't give too much unnecessary information, but be well prepared and keep your CV to hand - just in case. Speak clearly when giving your details and choose the words you use carefully. Don’t be over-familiar or use slang words.
You might be able to ask questions about the job or the company which may help you decide whether or not to apply.
Some employers might ask you to telephone them for a telephone interview to assess your suitability but they usually make this clear in the job advert. Employment agencies often give a short telephone interview before they ask you to come in to register with them.
Prepare for a telephone interview just as carefully as you would for a regular interview. Keep a copy of your CV handy along with a copy of the vacancy and pen and paper to write notes and other important information you may be told.
If you're calling from a landline, call from a quiet room with no distractions. If you're calling from a mobile or public telephone, make sure you have enough credit or change for the call.
If it isn't convenient for the employer to speak to you when you ring, ask what time would be best for you to call back.
Take the name of the person you've been speaking to. Remember to say 'thank you' and follow up with a letter of thanks. You can use the letter to restate your interest in the job and any additional information that you didn't get the chance to say on the telephone.
