Apprenticeships are Work Based Learning and are available to all age groups. People on apprenticeships can undertake qualifications to help them do their job.

These include NVQ qualifications, Key Skills and possibly a Technical Certificate related to the work. NVQ's have been designed by employers to measure successful performance in a particular job.

There are different levels of apprenticeship:

• Apprenticeship (NVQ level 2)
• Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ level 3)

A local Training provider will help deliver a structured training programme and support both the trainee and employer throughout.

Training may consist of on the job training and assessments, day release or block release to a local College or Training Provider or a combination of these.

In general the cost of training is met by the Learning and Skills Council, although in some instances you may be asked to make a contribution. You will normally be responsible for paying the wage to the apprentice.
