NVQ QUALIFICATIONS
– What are they and how do they operate?

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are a nationally recognised qualification based on standards developed by industry and commerce. NVQs are work based and assess a person’s ability to do the job.

There are five levels of NVQs; the table below gives information on these levels and their equivalents:

Level Academic Vocationally Related Work Based
5 Post Graduate Professional Level 5 NVQ
4 First Degree Advanced Diploma Level 4 NVQ
3 2 x A Levels Vocational A Level/ Advanced GNVQ Level 3 NVQ
2 5 x GCSE's - Grades A*-C Intermediate GNVQ Level 2 NVQ
1 5 x GCSE's - Grades D*-G Foundation GNVQ Level 1 NVQ

NVQ qualifications are usually delivered via recognised Colleges or Training Providers and include a combination of on-the-job training, day or block release to study, assessments in the work place and portfolio evidence building.

A young person is most likely to do NVQs whilst on an apprenticeship (Work Based Learning). There are different types of apprenticeships:

  • Apprenticeship (NVQ level 2)
  • Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ level 3)
