Work Experience

Connexions arranges work experience placements for students in schools and colleges across Tyne and Wear.

What is Work Experience?

Work experience offers students the opportunity to prepare for the challenges they will face in the workplace.  It allows students who are still at school to become familiar with the skills and attitudes needed by modern business.  It also helps them recognise that the demands of working life are undergoing rapid and constant change.

The success of a placement relies upon effective partnership between the provider, the organiser, the school and the student.

Most students have a placement of one or two weeks, although there is an increasing demand for extended placements, which can be for 1 or 2 days a week for a term or more. In addition to this, schools are requesting more vocational work experience.

Benefits to employers include influencing the quality of future employees; development of recruitment channels; influencing career choices; raising the community profile and creation of management and staff development opportunities within an organisation.

Tyne and Wear Education Business Link Organisation (TWEBLO) is the lead funding body for work related learning across Tyne and Wear. As part of this role TWEBLO is responsible for ensuring that adequate health and safety provision is in place for every placement. A representative from TWEBLO will often contact employers prior to the work experience placement commencing, and subsequently every 1, 2 or 3 years depending upon the nature of risk.

Employers

We are always looking for more employers to support this programme, to enable us to meet the needs, interests and aspirations of our young people. If you are considering offering work experience please ring Sue Rear on 0191 4432906. We will then arrange for a member of staff to visit you and discuss it further.
