The College was opened to offer a 42-week training course for school leavers who want to become part of the British Army. Not all school leavers are offered a place at the College; applicants are screened through the Army selection process.
Staff accompanied by pupils from Sunderland Schools visiting the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, September 2005.
The College has up to 2,000 people on site at any one time, 700 of which are staff and civilians. The recruits are expected to achieve NVQ level 2 in ITC and go up a level in their Literacy and Numeracy within the 42 weeks. Recruits live in rooms with 11 other same sex members in their section. They are expected to keep the room clean and tidy and their kit and room are inspected every morning. Although the regime is strict and the days start at 5.30am the recruits have most of the weekend as free time and can go into nearby Harrogate if they wish but must be back on the college site by 9.30pm.
The College has a well equipped education block and IT suite as well as having extensive gym facilities and a swimming pool. For some recruits it may be their first time away from home so they may need extra support in their first few weeks until they settle. A network of support is in place to help the recruits adjust. Potential recruits are encouraged to visit the College with their parents before committing themselves to the training. Overall the visit was an enjoyable day and very informative for both the staff and pupils that attended.
